Local Search Marketing

”Why Doesn’t My Business Appear in the Local Listings on Google or Yahoo?”

Two things you need to know about local search marketing:

1. Your ability to perform well in local search has almost nothing to do with how well your website is optimized

2. Local search requires its own strategy, separate from your website SEO strategy

Having said that, let’s take a step back and understand what we mean by local search. In January 2008 Google, Yahoo, and other major search engines rolled out a new interface in their search results for locally-targeted search terms. For example, if you search on Google for Washington DC Italian Restaurants, the results will show a map and 10 listings for Italian restaurants in DC. Google’s listings are referred to as the “local 10-pack.” On Yahoo, you will see 3 local listing results with a map. We call this is the “local 3-pack”. So, how do you get in the local listings pack?
